Michael Caine Explains Hallmark Christmas Movies

At Thanksgiving this year, while the men were watching football, the women split off to watch Hallmark movies. From what I understand, Hallmark movies are huge with the ladies. I've never seen one myself but fortunately we have Michael Caine to hit us with some knowledge.

Late Show - Norm 2003-2015

Blade Runner Day

It's the future again. The film Blade Runner takes place in "November 2019". Although I know of no exact day in the movie itself, the sequel places the original movie as taking place on November 20, 2019.

If you ever watch the movie after today, you're watching the past, not the future.

I'm going to commemorate the day by periodically narrating the events of my life unenthusiastically.

Here's the last time I remember it being the future.

NSP - We Built This City

Former music magazine Rolling Stone ranked "We Built This City" by Starship as the worst song of the 80s. In 2016, GQ named it the "worst song of all-time". I completely disagree. It's not my favorite but it's fine. And this cover is especially fun.

The worst song of all-time is any Limp Bizkit song. Which one? Pick a song, any song.

I tried to come up with my own worst song of the 80s but came up with nothing. Sure, the 80s had bad music but I really only remember the good or acceptable ones.

IMDB 250 - Parasite (2019)

If you're looking for a film to watch, I recommend the South Korean film "Parasite" (2019). It's a comedy, it's a drama, it's a suspense/thriller, it's a horror, it's social commentary... it's an experience in every sense of the word.

Don't read anything about it, but be warned that it's South Korean. South Korean films tend to be intense and disturbing, and this movie is no exception. Disturbing for sure, but the best film I've seen in a long time.

Late Night - Picking Apples with Mr. T

As noted previously, the best Conan bit of all-time is "Dudez A-Plenti" but only slightly less well known is the greatest Conan interview of all-time. That would belong to the Mr. T interview he did which, I believe, was the impetus for this segment. They realized there was gold and mined it.

I recorded the Mr. T interview and it was by far the most watched video I'd uploaded to youtube at the time that it was removed for copyright. Here's hoping Team Coco remembers and shares the official version because that thing is just the best.

Finally, the "I pity the fool" folk version still gets stuck in my head sometimes.

Late Night - Conan Visits Hairstyling School

Team Coco has posted the official "Conan Visits The Wella Hairstyling School". This is one of the videos that I had posted on youtube. Over and over, the main comment seems to be "Wow, that's Aaron Bleyaert?!" Over and over, people want to comment about that. That's not a criticism, I just find it strange.

"If hair is too long, cut it. Ooooohhhh!" is something me and my one friend used to say a lot. And then also: "Guess what, my story's better."

The original music was, of course, "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins.

10th Anniversary Blog Post

It was 10 years ago that the first post on this blog was made. It was about how Late Night with Jimmy Fallon was going to have a Yacht Rock Party. And hence, the blog's theme.

This is where I'm supposed to say how quickly 10 years flew by and it feels like yesterday but it definitely doesn't - it feels like a really long time ago. This might also be where I explain why I first created this blog and how things have changed. But I didn't create this blog, it blog was created by my friend Chuck and then given to me. I think the reason he created it was to cut down on the emails I was sending. And that was pretty much a sign because he doesn't really talk to me anymore.

But the email thing makes sense, looking at the early posts. This blog was about anything and everything that would've warranted an email. The main thing was always late night talk show stuff but there was also Philly sports news, Thom Yorke has a new band, Mr. Perfect playing Ping Pong, the best tv show no one is watching, the Imdb 250, and on, and on. Looking now, I found a forgotten post of note: when the mayor of Newark banned Conan from the city. That mayor is now running for President of the United States - Cory Booker. The second ever post was entitled "Who Cares Wins", it contains no context and only  embeds a now broken video from hulu. Very enigmatic. I think I know what that was, I think that was Jimmy Fallon doing a 80s training VHS sketch. The title is a reference to this video.

The blog would eventually focus almost exclusively on late night videos but the theme of broken links makes most of it irrelevant. Oh for access to the old clips. VHS is greater than Hulu, apparently. My blog might have been more useful as a document of the death of late night talk shows but, bucking the internet trend, I always tried to keep things relatively positive. So the only evidence of the break down is ever-larger gaps between late night-related posts.

Another thing that I didn't do on this blog is talk very much about myself. I didn't document the last decade of my life - the highs, the lows, the struggle, the everyday events. Going back and looking at the early posts, it seems like a missed opportunity but I'm not going to change now. On second thought, I remember a time I posted a personal observation and it had real life consequences so remaining mostly impersonal was probably a good thing.

This blog gets about 10 views per day and even though it was started as a way to talk to friends, I only know 1 person who bothers anymore. I assume the rest are from google searches gone awry. But if you're an actual human reader of this blog, I thank you and hope that you're actually benefiting in some way from this nonsense.

The Grinch

Recently on reddit the story broke that there's actually a "prequel" to "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" called "Halloween is Grinch Night". The reaction was shock: "how have I never heard of this 'til now?" There's actually a good reason no one's heard of it, it's terrible. If you can imagine taking the Grinch character and throwing him in a pointless, nonsense plot with many musical numbers and setting it at Halloween (sort of), you have "Halloween is Grinch Night". IMDB notes that it's the only Grinch special where he never becomes good in the end. Exactly. Why have characters with arcs?

But for all the "I can't believe there's another Grinch special" crowd, there's another surprise. There is actually a Grinch trilogy. Yes, there is a third Grinch special called "The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat" from 1982.

Now this is where you want to be - The Dr. Seuss Cinematic Universe equivalent of the first "Avengers" movie. Although, I kind of remember the Cat in the Hat also being a villain, so this is like Godzilla fighting King Kong?

In this edition, the Grinch actually wakes up feeling good one day and decides to do good for the world. But he looks in the mirror and his image convinces him that he needs to stay bad. The special has just started and already we're in very interesting psychological and philosophical waters. Since the image in the mirror is also the Grinch, the Grinch is both good and bad but the bad side convinces the good side to be bad. The psychology motif will be repeated.

Following his re-dedication to evil, he has a road rage incident with the Cat in the Hat (the Cat in the Hat is on a picnic) and the Grinch decides he needs to make the rest of the Cat's life a living Hell.... using technology.

The Grinch makes a machine that causes any creature to naturally make any sound he wishes them to make, he makes a machine that projects darkness and then switches it up and projects pinkness. Then there are other things that I don't even comprehend. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

This is an interesting twist on the Grinch mythos. He's an inventor? In the first special, he's a caveman who works hard to sew and create a wooden sled. Now suddenly he's created a supercomputer that defies the very laws of physics.

What is the point of any of this? It's unclear other than he just wants to ruin the Cat's day. The Cat wonders about the psychology of the Grinch and what has caused his Grinchiness. Possibilities explored: it's genetic, he was abused by his mom, a bad word from his teacher, brain damage, he was bullied, excess sauerkraut. The Grinch is even seen on a psychiatrist's chair.

In the end, psycho-analysis IS how the Cat in the Hat defeats him - the Grinch's love for his mother is the key to unlocking the Grinch psychology and he turns good.

Don't get me wrong, I generally like this special, it's obviously miles better than the Halloween special. Having two major stars pitted against each other is interesting and I like the imaginative machines. But when you compare the moral of the story here (which is that Freud is the answer), with "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" (in which the answer is "the spirit of Christmas" or whatever) and it's suddenly so clear that science will never be able to satisfy the deeper human need.

Continue? - Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball

I'm not going to leave anything to chance or worry about spoilers. The guys are in the middle of the Future Sports Tournament and the first question before us is whether "Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball" is the worst video game ever on Continue?.

The kicker is that it's somehow a Super Nintendo game even though it looks like it's for the NES.

The second question is: is the music from "Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball" the main theme from "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank"? Let Lexicorp deal with that!

Amazon UnMystery UnBoxing

Previously on Lost, we learned that a box of mysterious contents was headed my way. Today that box arrived. As I opened it, the Schrödinger's cat particles in superposition collapsed to...

A 12 Pack of Sunkist Cherry Limeade. Amazing.

This is in contrast with what my original order was, which was....

A 12 Pack of Sunkist Cherry Limeade.

You know, I made a big deal about the randomness of what a wrong order meant but just when you think you have a handle on randomness, you have no concept of what true randomness means. In trying to guess what the wrong order might be, I would never have guessed the random selection would be the same as the very thing I had ordered. What are the chances?!

According to the email, they're still sending my original order to make up for the mixup so I better  like this stuff.

Adventures with Amazon Shipping 2... And the Legend Continues...

In a previous installment, I experienced an Amazon shipping oddity and joked that I wanted to order more things just to see what would happen. Since then, I have had deliveries with completely mundane delivery photos. But now there is a new adventure, not with Amazon but rather a company that is on Amazon.

Having ordered a product, and after it shipped, I got an update saying:
"IMPORTANT

On Friday 9/6/2019 our shipping software ______ had a glitch. This glitch caused the shipping labels to be put on the wrong packing slip. In turn you received something other that what you were expecting or the incorrect quantity. Over the weekend we saw this error. Even though this is going to be an expensive error on our part we are making it right and sending the correct items out on Monday 9/9/2019.

Thanks for letting us make it right and keep the item you received on us."

Slowly it dawned on me... there is a product headed to me that's mine for free and it could be anything. Literally, anything. It's J.J. Abrams' "mystery box" incarnate. It could be anything from a box of eggs to an 18th century violin. Someone I talked to suggested it may be a boat - that's not me speculating, "sources" are saying a free boat may be headed my way!

Now, it should be considered that the product that I ordered may be a clue to the product that I didn't order - and the thing I ordered was soda - but still, I find that our current age is defined by its endless possibilities and there is the feeling that anything is possible.

Amazon Delivery Guy Gets Artsy with the Delivery Photo

Recently my neighbors recently decided to cut down all the trees that lined the boundary of our yards. Were they damaged, were they ugly? No, they were quite lovely. And then one day a crew is outside taking them out. Was I consulted for my opinion? No, the point is we need stumps. Stumps are the key, stumps are life. Our yards are now separated by stumps and lifeless dirt.

But this is all backstory to what took place next.

I ordered new bed sheets on Amazon. As you're probably aware, Amazon's new thing is to confirm that the package was delivered by taking a photo of the box on your doorstep. If someone in the neighborhood steals your package and you say it never arrived, hey, look at this photo, it is visual proof that we delivered it - it arrived.

So the delivery guy who delivered my sheets decided to "pose" (I can't think of a better word) the package next to one of my new stumps. Like so:

If the stump had been anywhere approximating a good delivery spot, this would be fine, as far as it goes, I'd still question why it's positioned that way but it would be fine. But this is not the case. The stump photo is far, far away from the door - yet the door IS where I found my package eventually. Here's a map of the difference:

So here is the reality as I understand it. And I apologize for how ridiculous this sounds. A delivery guy, instead of taking the package to the porch and leaving it, takes it over to a tree stump and sets the package down next to the stump and takes a photo of it.... with the stump. Then he carries it back to the porch and leaves it by the door.

Why? Why any of this? Are the delivery people getting bored? Is he taking up photography as a hobby and he wanted to make it more artsy? Is so, I have to say the result is not very good (rule of thirds and all that). I don't get it, I can't fathom what kind of plot this is. I'm so confused and at this point I'm motivated to order more things from Amazon just to see what happens.

Slaughter's Big Rip-Off

I've hit a Blaxsploitation pocket in my current movie queue and "Slaughter's Big Rip-Off" has come up.

On paper, it's the perfect movie - it stars Jim Brown, James brown did the score, a car goes over a cliff with the hero in it and he survives without injury... and in the first scene an airplane with a machine gun swoops down and shoots Punky Brewster's dad in the head. But that's not why you called. The most fascinating aspect of the movie is that the powerful white villain is played by Ed McMahon. Yes, that Ed McMahon.

And the thing is, he's pretty believable. He has the 80s Mad glasses, a suit, he yells at his underlings and he's a convincing Bad Boss Man. He reminds me of Frank Rizzo. Of course, looking at the picture above, he also looks like Cameron Mitchell.

In the end, it doesn't work out for him. He tries to defeat Slaughter by giving him 3 ½ stars instead of 3 ¾ stars and Slaughter guns him down with a machine gun.

And I should re-iterate that it's a perfect movie on paper. In actuality it's pretty average fare.

Late Night - The Audience of Kids Show

It was quite a mess, especially as the kids increasingly lost interest as the show wore on. But I always appreciated the stunt shows. When was the last time anyone did one? I don't know of any.

I didn't have nightmares of Robert Stack, per se, but his show was pure nightmare fuel.

Rad Deleted Scenes Update... UPDATE!

There is yet more written on the parchment...

Further back in the Bill Allen timeline, there is a post about the origin of the scenes and a screenshot:

Interesting to me are these comments:

Rad Deleted Scenes Update

A while back I cried out to the world for someone, anyone, to upload the Rad deleted scenes onto the internet.

Nothing has changed since then.

However, recently a reader with the username "the" has informed me that Bill Allen is holding a special screening of Rad in Huntington Beach (California) which will contain deleted scenes. The post:

There's no way for me to get to California so I'm out. My hope is someone bootlegs a small screening of a niche movie...

An observation. This confirms imdb's (and my) claim that there are deleted scenes out there. But Allen specifically says there are five and according to imdb there are six. The likeliest explanation, I think, is that Allen is not an obsessive fan and simply missed one but who knows.

He also says the scenes have never been seen "in the States". This also coincides well with the imdb page which says they were shown in Canada. But if I my memory is correct, they have been seen in the States because that's where I was when I saw them.

The Sockbaby Saga

Sockbaby is the second Channel 101 show I've become aware of (the first being Yacht Rock).

It's a pretty great action-comedy, especially if you consider that each episode was made for less than $300, which is insane.

Very few views on this. For instance, Part 3, as of this writing, is at 97 views. Seems like every video on the internet has more than that.

Hello.

Late Night - Conan & Andy Drive an Ice Cream Truck

For the youtube re-release, the original music used has been replaced with new music. I think they should state that in the video description to alleviate confusion but they don't. At least you know that going in.

This is one of the pieces I was waiting for as it has special significance to me. This was the comedy remote that got me to start watching Conan*.

I was already a Letterman fan for years before this. I knew from the first episode of the "Late Show" I had watched that I loved the show. But because of Conan's bad press when he started, and basically just ignorance, I was under the impression that Conan "sucked" and that was the end of it.

In August of 1997**, I was on Summer vacation in between my sophomore and junior years in high school. I was off from school but still working part-time in my teen "first job" job. One night my friend Jake was staying over and we turned on Conan (I don't remember why, exactly). We tuned in as this piece was playing, we maybe didn't even see the whole thing and loved it.

In particular, it was the joke at the end. In describing the madness of the kids getting free ice cream, Andy says, "Somebody smashed Piggy's glasses too." That joke was like a nuclear bomb that exploded our brains. We couldn't stop quoting it and came to the conclusion that "Andy is awesome". From then on I'd start watching Late Night regularly, not for Conan, but to see Andy. And then eventually Conan grew on me as well.

Looking back, one of the things I was excited about was the wish fulfillment of having your own ice cream truck. It's funny how this remote is the Venn diagram overlap of adulthood and childhood.

* - This is the skit that got me to start watching Conan but it's not the first time I saw the show. The first time I saw Conan was during the "mustard set" era and it was an interview segment. I was sleeping over my friend's house and he insisted that Conan's laugh was fake - not just "put on" but that it seemed like a sound effect overdubbed later kind of "fake". I disagreed but if you watch early Conan interviews, that phenomenon can still be recreated. I'm afraid my first Conan segment/interview/episode has been completely lost to time as these things are the only things I remember about the experience.

** - This piece first aired August 21, 1997. But pinning "I remember exactly where I was when this first aired" can be extremely dangerous because of reruns. Especially with late night talk shows - the most memorable bits are the ones they re-air the most. I think my memory agrees with August enough that it just feels right. I think I can assume this was the day.

Gettysburg: Animated Battle Map

Happy Independence Day. This is an excellent video illustrating the Battle of Gettysburg.

One of the things that can frustrate me about war documentaries is how they can talk about "flanks",  "attacks", "counter-attacks" and so forth and I have no mental picture of what's going on physically. This video is great for explaining the battle by showing the map with all the pieces on it in addition to showing how they move throughout.

One of the things I'd really like to learn more about some day is military strategy. It's such a huge blind spot in my historical knowledge. When a General "needs to take" a certain ridge, I want to know why they need to take that ridge. Or a certain city is a huge strategic target, what about the city makes it valuable, etc? I recognize and am fascinated by the fact that there's a game of chess being played at the highest level but it's as if I don't know the rules of chess.

Late Night - Dudez A-Plenti

This is big. This is big.

If I had access to Conan's upload schedule beforehand, I would have scheduled a vacation day today to lie in bed with Ritz crackers. That's because today is (apparently) the day where Conan's greatest comedy bit of all-time is uploaded to youtube. And not only is it his best bit, it's constantly been notoriously hard to find anywhere due to copyright strikes and an "alternate" version that's edited down.

Perhaps someday they'll upload the follow-up to "Making the Band": "Making the Video". For now, you can see that here.

NakeyJakey - Illegally Downloading Music

I really feel that iMesh was super underrated. An ultra easy to use UI, a good search engine with straightforward results and fast speeds; when you started a download it wouldn't permanently fail forcing you to start over. Cardboard Classic 2019

Dasaterines

Last night I had a dream that I was giving a presentation to my co-workers. The presentation was for work but I was giving it at home. I had a drawing of four columns for four different categories of things I wanted to describe. One of the categories was "Dasaterines" which is an umbrella term to encompass all the different changes that can be made to a message. The number of ways a message can be changed is nearly infinite but they are all dasaterines.

When I woke up, I googled the word and found 0 results.

Polyphonic - Scarborough Fair/Canticle

A fascinating examination and breakdown of the Simon and Garfunkel song "Scarborough Fair/Canticle".

This channel has a number of really interesting and insightful videos about music but this is my favorite so far.

2019 Oscars

In years past, I had the tradition of watching all the relevant Oscar-nominated movies, forming my own winners and posting the results in long, boring blog posts before the actual ceremony takes place. As fun as that was (for me, and me alone), I found an inescapable trend: the nominees were getting worse every year and my passion to pick a winner waned accordingly.

This year, once again, I've watched all the movies and have reached a breaking point. I simply don't care anymore. And I take no pleasure in making increasingly hostile diatribes about how the Academy has lost its mind. So I'm not going to subject anyone to that anymore.

If you're curious what my favorite movie of 2018 is, it's "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot". DWHWGFoF was not nominated for anything, as far as I know, and it didn't get incredible reviews. As far as I can tell, the big criticism of it is that it's "Oscar bait". I find that term problematic most of the time and I completely disagree with it in this case. If you're looking for a good drama, I highly recommend it.

Game Grumps - Painting with Bob Ross

I think, aside from the fact that they have none of the materials and have done none of the preparation necessary to do a Bob Ross painting, it turns out pretty well.

Thanos Has A Great Plan

The stupid imdb 250 made me watch Infinity War so now I'm posting this.

Warning: spoilers.

It really has got to the point where every big comic book movie makes it to the imdb 250. Oh how nice it would be nice if the people voting on imdb were actually fans of cinema first and fans of comic books second rather than the other way around. The Fast and the Furious series are a HUGE franchise and beloved by lots of people but people keep those in perspective; I never see those movies making the list.

What we need is more DC fan boys. The DC fans downvote Marvel, Marvel downvotes DC and the world achieves harmony. That's the key: balance. Things that are balanced are harmonious. Perhaps if we deleted half of all imdb users...
