The Video for L.A. is My Lady

There's a lot going on in the music video for Frank Sinatra's "L.A. is My Lady."

The song is yacht rock and the video resembles the Yacht Rock web-series.

It features Donna Summer(?), James Ingram, Quincy Jones; Latoya Jackson is drinking with Dean Martin. Michael McDonald puts an orange in a grocery bag, the orange travels and disappears. There is an implied Michael Jackson but they couldn't get the real one, so they show archival footage.

It's bonkers.

Christian Yacht Rock

First a summary of events from the Yacht or Nyacht Podcast(s) and then a personal anecdote.

On the Beyond Yacht Rock Podcast, Episode 99, they're listening to audience suggestions to determine, officially, whether the song is Yacht Rock. The suggestion is "Can't Stop Runnin'" by Roby Duke (above). The deck is stacked against it. They are decidedly anti-Christian and isn't Christian rock always lame? To top it off, the cover of the album, a photo of Roby himself, looks like this:

Rock Star.

But they listen to the song, and even with all these biases going against it, they are swayed that it is not just Yacht Rock, it garners a 90+ Yachtski score to be recognized as Essential Yacht Rock. They don't want to believe but the power of smooth music is undeniable and irrefutable. For the purposes of this narrative, it was like that clip where Susan Boyle goes on a show and everyone's like "Ugh, ugly people can't sing" and then she sings and everyone is shocked that ugly people can sing. It's just like that.

The floodgates are open. In the Yacht or Nyacht Podcast, Episode 35, they give "Seasons of Change" by Roby Duke an even higher score on the Yachtski Scale - 92.5 - another Essential song. In YONP Episode 58 it's Roby Duke's "All Lost" (below). The result is a lower score but still in the upper echelons of Yacht Rock canon. Finally, for completeness, in YONP Episode 60 they determine that Duke's "Dreams Alive" from 1989 is not Yacht.

"All Lost" and "Can't Stop Runnin'" are my personal favorites so those are the two I've embedded here.

And now a personal anecdote.

When I was a young teen, this one singer would sometimes visit my church to do concerts and/or lead the music in the service. I always especially enjoyed when he would make an appearance because he had such a relaxed, casual, somewhat goofy style. He was constantly talking, telling stories and making jokes, even at the expense of the music, if need be. He was like 60% singer with an acoustic guitar, 30% storyteller and 10% stand-up comedian. And when you're a kid in church, that's a really great break from the norm. The singer was Roby Duke.

The thing was, every time I saw him it was pretty much him with an acoustic guitar; he may have had a backing track sometimes but it was never a full band. Furthermore, I only saw him in church, I never investigated any of his albums. So how shocking it was to find that a small Yacht Rock podcast is listening to the "unknown acoustic guitar guy." And how much more shocking to find that he was not just a Yacht Rock artist all along but actually a Yacht Rock legend. Mind blowing.

Roby Duke's albums today are rare and seem to fetch hefty prices; some are apparently being imported from Japan. I learn from the internet that Roby Duke died in 2007. RIP.

Remembering Time Life Music Collections

Remember Time Life compilations? These were collections of music (120 unforgettable hits!), around some theme or genre, which came on (about) 10 CDs - or cassettes - or records. A long playlist of music isn't so special but specifically, here, I'm looking at the infomercials for the collections.

I've watched a few and the one above is my favorite. It overlaps the Yacht Rock genre pretty well and I love those laid back 70's vibes (70's and 80's).

My favorite aspect about them revolves around the live "presenters" they always have to have. All the clips of each song are like 5 seconds long but some of them get introduced by the hosts as if it's a radio DJ scenario. When you intro a specific song and then the clip of the song is over after 5 seconds it's like... that was so pointless.

A few other highlights:

The "Best of Soft Rock" (above) apparently comes from that specific time when music existed on the internet but not streaming. Part of their pitch is: buy the collection because, what are you going to do, download all these songs and burn them to CD yourself? Don't be crazy!

In "Summer Breeze" they seem to be taking advantage of the Yacht Rock resurgence. Apparently these are still going as of 2022 when music streaming is extremely available.

The one for "80's Music Explosion" features Belinda Carlisle as one of the "presenters" and her acting is a wonder of alien roboticness.

A few stray thoughts:

Do you think these could be a hit with the tiktok generation? If the song changes every 10 seconds, are you in that sweet-spot where they don't get bored? Is this the future of music?

These are great background entertainment for doing work, I find.

Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary

When making a "dockumentary" about Yacht Rock, there are beset on both sides by two ditches - you can embrace the parody webseries origin of the genre (and treat it as a joke) or you can ignore the origins and define the genre as the general public has since defined it (Jimmy Buffett, The Eagles, nautical themes, sailor hats, etc.) "Yacht Rock" veers off into neither ditch. In fact, I was surprised at how serious a music documentary it is. This is "The History of Rock 'n' Roll" for 2024.

And, at the same time, they also give proper weight and deference to the group of guys who invented the term.

Highly recommended if you want to see an excellent music documentary.

One of the through-lines that goes between MST3K and "Best of the Worst" and shows like that they're mocking films but they're often doing so while appreciating any traces of good art, even at the service of really bad movies. It's an admirable trait to still find the good within the bad, especially as it's a trait I don't have, or at least, haven't developed. One of the things that struck me as poignant, reflecting on the re-emergence of the Yacht Rock genre is this idea that there are these dusty records that no one wants because they're old and out of fashion and someone listens to them and points out that there's something great there and we should all re-think our biases. Let's face it, Yacht Rock - and Easy Listening moreso - was playing when I was a kid and going to the dentist or shopping for clothes; I have, even subconsciously, dismissed huge swaths of music. I admire anyone who shakes off preconceived notions, paying no service to form or fashion and examines the thing objectively for what it is.

A Song Was Stuck in My Head for Years - I Found It

Two years ago I briefly mentioned that I was looking for a song/melody that I couldn't place:

There is a certain melody played by brass instruments that I remember from the 1980s that I can't place. Last night before going to sleep I added a todo list item "Chicago hits."

It wasn't found in Chicago. I also tried Herb Alpert, it wasn't found there. I thought it might be a TV theme ("Too Close for Comfort" is similar) but no luck. For a few years, from that day until now, I've been trying to find it. Today I found it via a Short of a Baseball clip suggested by Youtube.

The song is Bobby Caldwell - "What You Won't Do for Love"

The part that was in my head was the outro.

And it's smooth. Is it smooth enough? Should we push our luck and see if it's Yacht Rock? IT'S YACHT ROCK. Nice.

The Charismatic Voice - What a Fool Believes

An opera singer hearing Michael McDonald for the first time. Nice.

Watch the precision here. She zeroes in on both the "bounce" and the smoothness. The Yacht Rock genre is defined by two characteristics: 1) Smoothness and 2) The Doobie Bounce (with some exceptions). Not surprisingly, "What a Fool Believes" is the only song to achieve a perfect 100 on the Yachtski Scale.

Of course she also asks: if Michael McDonald was a smoothie, what kind of smoothie would he be? So there's that.

Her "Happy Songs that are Actually Sad" genre suggestion is eerily similar to a genre I've been thinking about for a while. Maybe I'll write more about that some day. I think the two things are different enough that it could still be valid.

Donny Benet - Moving Up - Is it Yacht Rock?

Is it Yacht or Nyacht?

In terms of the song itself, I'm saying this is strongly in the Yacht column. Donny would do well to get another vocalist, he's not a great singer, his role as lead singer would not last long if Steely Dan are anywhere near the studio. I'm going to say this is solidly in the Yacht Rock category, it's smooth, it has the Doobie bounce, I'm going to give it a Yachtski Score of 70.

The Essential Yacht Rock Playlist

Just wanted to recommend a youtube playlist that I've been enjoying lately.

The Essential Yacht Rock Playlist is a youtube playlist of all Yacht Rock songs with Yachtski scores of 90 and above.

You mean I get all these great Yacht Rock classics on just one compact disc?!

Listen to the playlist here.

Listen to all Certified Yacht Rock songs here.

Find the full list of Yachtski scores here. A score of 50+ is Yacht, a score of below 50 is Nyacht.

The Sockbaby Saga

Sockbaby is the second Channel 101 show I've become aware of (the first being Yacht Rock).

It's a pretty great action-comedy, especially if you consider that each episode was made for less than $300, which is insane.

Very few views on this. For instance, Part 3, as of this writing, is at 97 views. Seems like every video on the internet has more than that.

Hello.

Tonight Show - Freestylin' with The Roots

I'll be honest, this edition felt a little weak to me. That is, until yacht rock made an appearance. There's nothing like spontaneously created smooth music.

The Tonight Show - The Doobie Brothers

Michael McDonald reunites with The Doobie Brothers on the Tonight Show:

And the web-exclusive: the performance of "What a Fool Believes".

Karl Pilkington once said that he doesn't understand the point of a medley and I think I see where he's coming from. Why two half songs instead of one whole one? Isn't it selling yourself short to say that people can't get through the whole song? Was it some weird compromise between the "Doobie Brothers" camp and the "Michael McDonald" camp? Well, "What a Fool Believes" is great.

Tonight Show - Mix Tape Month

What was called the "Yacht Rock Party" has now perhaps been changed into Mix Tape Month. Instead of limiting themselves to the Yacht Rock genre, they're going to have "one of Jimmy's favorite [musical] guests" on to perform. And instead of one day, it's once every week for a month.

The lineup is:

Thursday - Christopher Cross performs "Sailing".
TBA - Yolanda Adams performs "Victory".
TBA - The Doobie Brothers reunite with Michael McDonald

That's it. Are there three weeks in a month? I think the quality control may be slipping. But that aside, I like the choices. I mean, all I need is "Sailing" anyway.

Yacht Rock 2011 Announced

Yacht Rock 2011 has been announced. Get your calendars in order. This year's Yacht Rock party is set for this coming Monday. The musical guest will be Ambrosia and they'll sing their classic "Biggest Part of Me". In case this song isn't familiar, this might help: the song should be titled "Make a Wish, Babay".

Here's a preview. Or something to play while you get your Captain's hat and blue blazer out of storage.

Yacht Rock 2K10: Epilogue

Friday was Yacht Rock 2K10. There were sailor's hats, sweaters around the neck, tropical drinks, sunsets, champagne and, of course, smooth music.

Below is Robbie Dupree and The Roots performing "Steal Away":

One special surprise was a special guest appearance by Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald aka J. D. Ryznar and Hunter D. Stair the two creators of the "Yacht Rock" series.

Yacht Rock 2K10

YACHT ROCK IS BACK - AND IN BULK. This Friday, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon will throw its second Yacht Rock party. The special musical guest will be Robbie Dupree who will sing his smooth hit "Steal Away". My first impression is that it's no comparison to Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald but we'll see how it goes.

Yacht Rock Party: Epilogue

Epilogue: Johnny Louis never made it to San Francisco. He was hit and killed by a drunk driver.

Adam and Katie were married later that summer but divorced 5 years later. Both have since remarried.

---
As a bookend to the Yacht Rock Party, here are some notable Yacht Rock songs that I either love or are just evocative of memories from their era.

Steely Dan - Peg
Knowledgeable music listeners will recognize that this was sampled in the also cool "Eye Know" by De La Soul. This song features Michael McDonald.

The Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes
Written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. Michael Jackson has also claimed to have contributed to at least one backing track but is not credited.

Jefferson Starship - Sara
OK, maybe this one doesn't belong here, I don't know, but I felt it should be included. It's the epitome of "smooth rock" for better or worse in my opinion. Hey, is that Rebecca Demornay?! Yes, it is. I'm no doctor but if you suspect storms are brewin' in your eyes, you should seek medical attention and/or a meteorologist immediately.

Michael McDonald - I Keep Forgettin'
Man, Michael McDonald is dominating this list. Again, sharp music listeners will note that this song was sampled later by Warren G on "Regulate".

Christopher Cross - Never Be the Same
I really wanted to use "Ride Like the Wind" but I thought I would avoid repetition. This song though, REALLY sounds like it was used as a television show theme in the 80s. Perhaps it's just my imagination but I think it's from somewhere. What am I thinking of? It's similar to the "Doogie Howser" theme, but I think there's something else... Anyway, good song.

Mark Your Calendars.

This upcoming Monday, the following will happen on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: a Yacht Rock Party with Christopher Cross and The Roots.

Let's take this one at a time. Monday Christopher Cross will be on Late Night and will perform the classic "Ride Like the Wind". Not only that, he will be backed by The Roots. They are also trying to get Michael McDonald involved. In addition, it will be a Yacht Rock party. This is (apparently) a party where everyone wears a captain's hat and drinks champagne as if they were the captain of a yacht.

It's so logical, there's no way this can fail!
