Norm Macdonald on the Tonight Show (7/23/99)

It's against my religion to post anything that is any way related to - or even mentions - Jay Leno, but I found this segment on a VHS of mine recently (I don't know how it got there, I swear!) and I don't see it anywhere on youtube and then Norm passed away...

It's a fun interview and it's Norm. So here's a little additional material for the Norm Macdonald rabbit hole.

Dave and Conan

It could be the greatest compilation of all-time. It's Conan on Dave's show and Dave on Conan's show.

My new favorite thing is Dave and Conan talking about Bob Crane (Col. Hogan on Hogan's Heroes).

The innocence of Part 1 gives way to turbulence and controversy as Part 2 mostly consists of Letterman commenting on the Tonight Show situation in 2010. It's still kind of fun though. Don't miss the last Conan interview from 2012.

Tonight Show - John Cleese

The weird thing that happened during this segment is it briefly made me nostalgic for daytime talk shows. Surprising but true.

I wonder where Jenny Jones is these days.

Tonight Show - End of the Streak

There was a time when I had watched every single episode of Conan (both on the Tonight Show and the show "Conan") but that streak came to an end in November of 2015. There was a time when I had watched every episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and that is still true. Then when he left the show, I watched every episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers before stopping that at 100 episodes.

And up until now I've watched every episode of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and now that streak is coming to an end. (I've watched every minute the show except that one thing, but we don't talk about that. ever.)

I watched every episode of the Tonight Show up to, and including, May 3, 2017 - Episode #667 - Guests: Kaley Cuoco, Horatio Sanz and I will not be watching #668 - Chris Pine and Fran Lebowitz (nothing against them).

My nature/instincts suggest that I should write a long blog post explaining the reasons why and critiquing the show's evolution. But there's so much negativity on the internet, I don't think I need to add to it.

Suffice it to say: I still enjoy the show, but I just don't have the time to spend anymore. I have a free hour today where I could potentially watch an episode but I find I'd rather do other things (I've got a podcast I'd rather listen to, for instance). I'll still keep up with the comedy clips on youtube, but I've had my fill of monologues and have had enough celebrity chat to last a lifetime.

The Tonight Show - Nicole Kidman Returns

Are you a glutton for awkwardness? Do you enjoy embarrassed tension? Sure, we all do. Then you're going to love the new Nicole Kidman interview.

This is Kidman's first appearance since revealing that she went on a non-date with Jimmy a long time back.

James Spader tells a story of hanging out at the Kennedy household.

Tonight Show - Spit Takes and Space Rock

Each of these is like half a video so the two of them together warrant a post.

First up is the Point Pleasant Police Department sketch. Is there a more threadbare conceit for a comedy sketch anywhere? I don't know of one. But the "writer's strike" clip is a good wink to the audience that they know that we know.

Oh, hey look who it is, it's Coldplay! Life on Mars.

Today I learned that the piano player on the original Bowie version was none other than Rick Wakeman. Nice.

Apparently Coldplay once asked David Bowie if he would sing on one of their songs. Bowie turned them down saying the song wasn't very good.

Tonight Show - Is Something Happening?

For the week of 1/25, the Tonight Show aired new episodes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Then aired reruns Thursday and Friday (1/28, 1/29).

Then this week (2/1), the Tonight Show will air reruns Monday, Tuesday and then return with a new episode on Wednesday.

This is unusual for a late night talk show - when they take a week off, it's usually not split across two weeks. And there hasn't been any news about going off the air for a new baby or because of an injury. There's also no explanation anywhere. Strange.

Tonight Show - Bob Dylan

I don't know how The Tonight Show can get a guest like 60s era Bob Dylan, but somehow they do. All I know is he's covering a song that I've never heard before and also that he's gone electric... so I guess we should boo him... and it's time for Levon to go work on an oil rig or something.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas, everyone. For this Christmas, I will be posting Jimmy Fallon and The Roots (together with a children's choir) singing "Christmas Time is Here" from my favorite, "A Charlie Brown Christmas".

Unfortunately, it's not on youtube, only hulu and hulu is really finicky with embedding videos for some reason.

Does this work? Do you see anything? Is it a merry yule loggy time now?

*Sigh* the internet.

Anyways, here's video #2 in case that one doesn't work.

Self-explanatory:

Tonight Show - Will Ferrell is the New Santa

The "Santa" thing is old and tired. It's time for a new hipper, cooler Santa for the new Willenium.

ELO - Mr. Blue Sky

Jeff Lynne's ELO performs "Mr. Blue Sky" on the Tonight Show. Can you believe this is a "web exclusive" and didn't actually air? The world is a strange place.
