Cheri Oteri Interview

I don't know if you're in the market for a longform interview with SNL cast member Cheri Oteri but I saw this and said, "Yes, please."

I think it was already pretty known that the Rita Delvecchio character was based on growing up in Upper Darby but it was fun hearing about it. And SNL stories are always fun, especially when Christopher Walken is involved.

Andy Richter in The Real Live Brady Bunch

Apparently there was a live show in 1991 where actors would re-enact episodes of "The Brady Bunch" and the cast included Andy Richter as Mike (the dad). Other cast members included Jane Lynch and Melanie Hutsell (who would go on to parody the same part on SNL.) Becky Thyre as Marcia is spot-on.

Quite a time capsule. Man, I wish I enjoyed anything as much as this audience loves this show. Does this support my theory that people in the past were much more joyous? My instincts tell me this is just an aberration.

You can watch a behind-the-scenes "making of" look at the show here.

Voices That Care

I fully lived through the era of music where large groups of musicians were getting together to Make A Difference... Live Aid, We Are the World, Do They Know It's Christmas?, etc. but I wasn't aware enough to really keep track and not having MTV was also a big factor. Case in point, I had never heard of "Voices That Care". Do you know what that is?

"Voices That Care" is the song (and the group) which was released for the Gulf War. With everyone from Celine Dion to Garth Brooks to Kenny G and Michael Bolton, it really underscores the low point that music hit in the early 90s. That's not even getting into the assemblage of non-singing actors and celebrities that is too long to reproduce.

"Hey we're putting together a song."

"OK, who you got?"

"I have Janet Gretzky, Nell Carter, Don King, Jon Lovitz and Mike Tyson."

"I'll tell you what you have there,,, you have a hit."

The song was not meant to be pro-war or anti-war or political in any way, the point was merely to support the troops. It's hard to criticize such a benign stance but I also can't help but laugh at the generic "Sending Our Love Down the Well" nature of it. Perhaps it's the final straw that gave us Famous Helping People. Who knows. "We're sending love and care to all the troops" Uh, okay...?

To round off the topic, there was also a Heavy Metal assembly to help famine in Africa (Hear 'n Aid) and another Heavy Metal group that was limited to just Swedish artists (Swedish Metal Aid) that helped... something. Uh, it was for charity...

And SNL mocked this trend with "Musicians for Free-Range Chickens," "Recurring Characters for Unity" and, a nostalgic favorite, "Rockers to Help Explain Whitewater."

RIP Don West

Don West passed away December 30, 2022. While not famous, exactly, Don was somewhat notable - Don West was the guy who would come on those Home Shopping channels and sell Baseball cards and the like. More recently, he became an announcer for pro wrestling.

He was apparently well-known enough to be parodied on SNL, even being portrayed by Will Ferrell. Though my favorite of these parodies isn't on youtube.

On another personal note, I've never understood this show's existence. They would always say that they were selling everything for way less than it was worth, and I, being really into sports cards at that time, thought I could confirm that they were telling the truth - everything WAS WAY more valuable than you'd get it there. But how or why would anyone do that? If something is selling for $100, why sell it for $10? Call me naive but it remains a total mystery to me.

And another funny aside about the nature of the brain. I know, in retrospect that all the cards are junk - the card market at that time was a bubble that has since collapsed - but even watching these videos in 2023 I still do get excited as if these are really precious items, as if I'm still in 1993.

Jim Breuer Telling Norm Stories

As the title says, Jim telling Norm stories.

Jim's impression of Darrell's impression of Phil Donahue is phenomenal.

One story he doesn't tell, perhaps because he's tired of it, is the Twilight Zone sketch story:

Mr. T on Saturday Night Live

Mr. T appeared on Saturday Night Live twice. In fact, imdb lists his two different appearances in two different sections of his page. He appeared in one episode in a "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood" skit as well as "Mr. and Mrs. T Bloody Mary Mix" and then later co-hosted an episode along with Hulk Hogan to promote Wrestlemania I. Imdb lists his first appearance as "actor", they list his hosting of SNL as "self." I suppose that makes sense when you really think about it but it confused the heck out of me.

Mr. T's appearance on SNL is very typical stuff. There are a few things that stood out to me. I should mention that this is the Dick Ebersol era of SNL so it's the Christopher Guest, Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, etc. cast. So that's the flavor.

First off, Mr. T and Hulk Hogan do the opening "monologue" and it looks like the picture above. Mr. T has made a career out of being a large guy, he's not tall, he's 5'11'' but he's big. It's amazing to me how small he looks next to Hulk Hogan. That guy really is giant.

The monologue is basically a wrestling promo. The only thing that stood out to me is they make a joke about the Richard Belzer incident. Maybe it's just hindsight or the fact that I'm from a weaker, wimpier era, but that seemed to me to be poor taste.

So then it's the skits... Mr. T appears in 3 skits and in all of them he's just playing Mr. T. Seems like this would be a chance for the writers to get creative and have him play against type but then again, it's possible they proposed that and he refused. This is the era of Mr. T being as serious as a heart attack.

Mr. T appears in "Mr. and Mrs. T Bloody Mary Mix" - a fake commercial where Robin Duke (made-up to look like Mr. T) and Mr. T sell bloody mary mix. According to Robin Duke, her repetition of "I pity the fool" in this sketch is what made "I pity the fool" is what really injected it into the mainstream and caused it to become T's official catchphrase. Oh, she did that? Call me skeptical.

The most famous sketch from the episode, and also one of the most famous SNL clips in existence, is "Fernando's Hideaway." In case you don't recall, you've probably seen it in the clip shows. It's the one where Billy Crystal improvs in a Spanish accent and Hulk Hogan and Mr. T struggle to maintain character and not break up. As the most famous Mr. T highlight, it's ironic that all traces of it seem to be erased from the internet. NBC: they do whatever they can to not make money.

So that's about it.

Fun Fact: The funniest Hulk Hogan SNL sketch, in my opinion, is the one that didn't have Hulk Hogan.

The True Story of The Lost Boys' Sax Man

Tim Capello, the Sexy Sax Man*, is finally getting the recognition he so desperately deserves. Read the article in gizmodo here.

[Technical Difficulties Embedding Youtube Video Here]

It's interesting to hear the article address the SNL skit from 2010, confirming what I thought then.

Yeah, and I still believe.

* Hopefully I can call him the Sexy Sax Man, not to be confused with the second Sexy Sax Man (I call him Sexy Sax Man #2) and also not to be confused with Epic Sax Guy. Gotta be clear.

SNL - The Sensitive Drill Sergeant

This is one of those classic SNL skits that I've always remembered but would have trouble tracking down.

Would it be impossible for Will Ferrell to re-join Saturday Night Live?

SNL - Farewell Mr. Bunting

The odd thing about this is the age of the reference. Do the kids today know about "Dead Poet's Society"?

The odder thing about this is that SNL actually did something funny. Shocking.

Tonight Show - Jimmy's SNL 40 Story

Jimmy tells the story of what happened to him at the SNL 40th Anniversary party. I'm sorry I missed it.

You can tell they had a long night because later in the show, Jimmy mentioned that Edward Norton was on the show and he came out for his interview. Once everyone determined that it wasn't time for the interview yet, Ed had to go back from whence he came.

The Late Night Premiere

The first episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers premiered tonight and the future is uncertain.

Late night talk shows almost always start slow, they almost always take time to find their groove and get the proper footing. So I don't think anyone can predict anything from just the first show. However it did have noticeable weaknesses.

What should have been the obvious strength of the show was a huge weakness. Seth Meyers comes from the "Weekend Update" desk at Saturday Night Live so making jokes about the news is second nature at this point. But that's also the problem. The monologue is supposed to be direct communication to the audience - it's supposed to be conversational - Seth belted out the jokes in exactly the same "fake newscaster" style that he's been doing on "Weekend Update". Everything he said sounded like yelling and the jokes suffered. That's an easy fix though so hopefully it happens.

Over to desk chat: more yell-talking. The band is also a bit strange, one of the members is Fred Armisen (which would be a bonus) but there's some strange arrangement where he's going to be in the band some of the time but often leave to do other things, I don't know how it works. The comedy was standard cheap late night stuff but at least he stopped yelling for them. The interviews (Amy Poehler and Joe Biden) were fine if a little low on energy.

And that's the show. In summary, it felt like Steps 1-5 on how to do a talk show. It's as if they're simply going through the motions of filling up network time with no passion for originality or personality. I want to emphasize again that the long-term success of a talk show is just about impossible to predict. But right now the point is more about whether I'm suitably interested in following it nightly. I don't see anything to grab onto thus far.

As of now the episode isn't available online. When it is, you'll find it here.

Edit: To be totally fair to the new Late Night, my viewing of it may have been affected by the news that I may have just lost a large sum of money. That isn't good for entertainment, surely. That's a whole other story. You can watch the show and decide for yourself anyway.

Worlds Collide : MST3K and Late Night

LEAVE THE BRONX.

I was drifting off to sleep listening to the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode "Escape 2000" when I thought I heard an unlikely name.

I rewound to the same moment. Clear as day, Tom Servo says, "Steve Higgins". Here's what it looks like:

Watch the moment here.

LEAVE THE BRONX.

Steve Higgins - in addition to being a long-time and current writer on "Saturday Night Live" - is the announcer and sidekick for "Late Night" with Jimmy Fallon. Here's what he looks like today:

The writers of MST3K are the kings of the obscure reference but, even so, I had to wonder how they know of him. Turns out that at the same time that MST3K was starting out on Comedy Central, Steve Higgins was a writer/performer on the Comedy Central show "Higgins Boys and Gruber" which Joel Hodgson was involved with as well.

LEAVE THE BRONX.

The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With At a Party is back for another "commentary". Obviously Seth still has some growing up to do.

Monday-To-Friday Saturday Night Live!

The BET show "What Up With That?" is back with a whole new episode.

-- Spoilers --

The big thing, for me, was the appearance of Jackie Rogers Jr. I'm sure the audience doesn't know who that is, but "Jackie Rogers Jr's $100,000 Jackpot Wad" is an overlooked classic sketch. When Martin Short appeared on Late Night this week, The Roots played the "Jackie Rogers Jr." theme as his walk-on music.

But the big thing, for everyone else, is the fact that Samuel L. Jackson cursed on network television. It's muted on the internet clip, but you can see him say the F word. Then, off-camera he says "Some bull----!" causing Keenan Thompson to reply, "Come on now. That costs money". And, yes, in the live broadcast those words definitely did go out.

I gotta wonder what he's thinking. There's a script and he only would have one line so it's obviously blatant (as opposed to just a flub). And he has to know it's being broadcast live because that's right there IN the title of the show... I'd be surprised if he's not banned from the show because... well... that's going to cost money.

TGYWYHSACWAAP

Another highlight from this week's SNL was a conversation with The "Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party". In fact, I kind of do wish I had started a conversation with her at a party.

Can I sing a Negro Spiritual real quick?
