Cheri Oteri Interview

I don't know if you're in the market for a longform interview with SNL cast member Cheri Oteri but I saw this and said, "Yes, please."

I think it was already pretty known that the Rita Delvecchio character was based on growing up in Upper Darby but it was fun hearing about it. And SNL stories are always fun, especially when Christopher Walken is involved.

MST3K Social Distancing Special

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Social Distancing Special took place today. I almost missed it for reasons I can't explain. It was a little dicey, the audio of the movie was too low and the audio of the cast was too high - I couldn't get in the zone. Is it possible that was just my computer? Still, it's my happening and it freaks me out.

There was one particular part that jumped out like a lightning bolt:

Tom Servo: [Reading the side of a moon rover] "Isn't that the new Preston and Steve catchphrase - 'Danger! Explosive door bolts?'"

How'd they make it in?! Amazing. As I noted long ago, the show is currently rife with Philadelphia jokes. But unlike back then, I now have a lead. Joel Hodgson is still in the area but I still don't think it's his style (not growing up here, I'd think he wouldn't care). But writer Matt McGinnis is also from the area and he's my best guess.

P&S - Soviet Jokes

We think of the Soviet Union as a place devoid of lightheartedness, but no! A new story reveals that during the Cold War the CIA compiled a list of Soviet jokes for.... some reason.

P&S - The Warrant Hotline

No, the Warrant Hotline is not the number you call after watching America's Most Wanted, it's one of those 900 numbers from the 80s or 90s!

Yeah, it's a ripoff scam but it's a lot of other things too!

2017 Cardboard Classic

The rules of the Cardboard Classic are simple: make a sled out of cardboard and glue and then ride it down a hill. Here are this year's entries:

2015 Cardboard Classic

The rules of the Cardboard Classic are simple: make a sled using only cardboard and glue. And yet, ever year the sleds get more and more creative and impressive.

And yet for how funny and crazy the event is, it seems to me to be the best kept secret going. I would think this thing would be "known" by now. I would think that each year's video would be another viral sensation. As of now, this video has only 467 views. I don't mind being in on a secret, I'm just surprised.

Michael Giacchino Interview

I thought this was a really interesting interview about film scores. Michael Giacchino isn't a household name but he did the scores for "Up", "Lost", the new "Star Trek" movies, "Ratatouille" as well as the scores for the "Medal of Honor" and "Call of Duty" video game franchises.

The interview talks about the art of scoring, how they're written, how they work, why sometimes they don't and so on, and so on. Check it out if you have half an hour.

P&S - Casey Kasem is Missing

I love Steve's Casey Kasem impression. I can't get enough of it. Recently it was revealed that Casey Kasem may be on a Native American reservation and it lead to a short tirade.

The pre-requisite to any Steve bit on Kasem is knowing this audio (warning: language):

And this is the new result:

P&S - Bono as a Wedding Singer

Preston and Steve riff on the idea of Bono being a wedding singer. After the initial intro, be sure your sound is up because it's a little hard to hear.

Incidentally, the same general concept came up before on the Ben Stiller Show.

P&S - Rocky IV Translation

At the end of Rocky IV, Rocky speak to the Soviet people and single-handedly defeats communism. But when he speaks to them, he speaks through a supposedly Russian interpreter. So is the translation in the movie accurate? Preston and Steve investigate it's validity in this clip:

A few explanations to some of the references:

"Carwashes where the people are." is a reference from earlier in the show.
"Been come to known as." is a garbled phrase inside-joke of the show.
"Resist we much." is a quote from Al Sharpton.
"When it's time to change you've got to rearrange." are some of the lyrics of the Brady Bunch song "Time to Change".

P&S - Tracy Chapman

During a "Music News" story about a heavy metal festival, Preston and Steve get on a tangent about Tracy Chapman.

This clip is highly edited - the actual discussion was much longer and funnier - you can hear the full segment on this episode of their podcast.
