I love the idea of horribly out of place humor. It's like when something incredibly morbid is going on in a movie and something totally random happens for a brief moment. The humor sucking you out of the doldrums makes it so much funnier, perhaps there's something about momentum going on but I can't really peg the words to explain it so good luck on guessing my inner thoughts.
