The SAT Question That Everyone Got Wrong

Good thing I didn't take the SATs in 1982.

Safe Sunscreen

Dateline: Baywatch Season 6, Episode 15.

[Stephanie and her boyfriend are enjoying a picnic. The boyfriend's beeper goes off.]

Stephanie: I thought you had the whole day off.

Boyfriend: No, days off for a doctor are a fallacy. As long as there are medical emergencies, there are no days off.

Stephanie: Well I think I'm having a medical emergency right now - it's my heart, it's beating dangerously fast.

[They make out. It's important to note that as they make out, and for the rest of the scene, someone is probably dying.]

[Doctor Boyfriend feels up her leg and notices she has a suspicious mole. He suggests she should get it checked out.]

Stephanie: I use sunscreen, I tan safely.

Boyfriend: There's no such thing as a safe tan, you know.

And that's the key takeaway here. You can practice safe tanning but there's no such thing as safe tan.

The B-Story to Stephanie's cancer scare is Hulk Hogan and "Macho Man" Randy Savage wrestling against Ric Flair and Vader to determine the fate of a beach-side weightlifting center.

Not a joke. Wooooo!

A Joe Matarese Roast Retrospective

You're probably aware of Joe Materese from the time he tried to do a TV show and got roasted - I posted it on this blog last year. Here's a podcast re-visiting the event and adding in some context and analysis.

WATP - Tom Myers' New Monologue

Yo, a new Tom Myers monologue just dropped. The WATP crowd is known for being a bit critical, it's what they do, but in this case I think they went too easy with this. This is not comedy, these are not even jokes, this is just words strung together into sentences and nothing else. Absolutely incredible.

Brits Try Wawa

The question here is: is Wawa better than Buc-ee's? And I've never been to Buc-ee's so I can't comment. But I think this review is fair.

Ted Lewis and His Band - She's Funny That Way

When I was in college I stumbled across a radio station that was "the hits of the 20's, 30's and 40's." This was a revelation. I parked my dial on that station and left it there. I thought to myself, "I may never get the opportunity to hear these songs again." Clearly I was not anticipating the rise of youtube and spotify but there is something different about a radio station and it would have been a 20 year wait to get the same curated list experience.

And yes, most of the hits of that era are simple and largely forgettable pop music. It was an era of catchy tunes that you can dance to. To some extent, every era is that but it's especially true there. But there are a few songs and artists I gleaned and took with me.

That radio station only lasted a few years but recently I discovered a local radio station that's almost the same thing and I added it to my presets. As I was driving to get groceries, this song came on.

It's funny how there were no rules - in a 3 minute song and a minute of it is intro and there is no discernible verse/chorus structure, as far as I can tell. And it's essentially a throwaway novelty song but there's something so poignant about the whole experience that "hits different" from anything else you'll hear. See what you think.

Late Night - Artie Kendall

It's a little Artie Kendall, come on.

The official Conan channel hasn't released a lot of Artie but that's ok, this one is my favorite.

More music from the 20's incoming...
