Rifftrax - Halloween Party
Another short film with no purpose. It seems there was an era where professors from Arizona State College would make shorts that have no entertainment, artistic or educational value. Just wasting everyone's time.

Late Show - Dana Carvey
A conspiracy on ABC? Sounds a lot like Conan.
I wish I could say I'd never seen "Shakespeare in Love" but I caved a while back because I was trying to complete those Greatest Movie lists. I don't remember much (any) of it but I wish I had paid attention to the mention of the theater.

Craig Kilborn Wants to be on a Soap Opera
Of the new batch of videos that I'm uploading this is my second favorite - second only to the Norm Macdonald interview. I've watched it many times and it doesn't get old, it always hits me the right way for some reason.
Even that thumbnail is spectacular.

The Rad/Full House Connection
Forgive me, I'm sure this is common knowledge to some people, but I recently learned that Becky (Marta Kober) from "Rad" actually went on to be a fairly successful actress. Her biggest credit (aside from "Rad" and "Magnum P.I.") is probably being one of the teens in "Friday the 13th Part 2." I had no idea.
But what I was most tickled by was that she appeared in an episode of "Full House." In the Season 6, Episode 1 episode entitled "Come Fly with Me," Marta appears very briefly as Brandy, a woman who Uncle Jesse mistakes for an autograph seeker.
Sorry, this is the best picture I could get - she's scowling throughout the entire shot.
And, of course, she appears in the same scene as Lori Loughlin:
So two cast members of "Rad" appearing together in the same episode, same scene of "Full House." Moreover in both cases one of them is playing a character named Becky. The imdb Trivia page for this episode makes no note of this, by the way.

Late Show - Biff Henderson's Fun with a Stopwatch
Biff Henderson uses a stopwatch to time things. It's "a fascinating anthropological pursuit."

Japan Snack Reviews #4
Reaching the end of the Japanese snacks and it's a lot of small individual candy items...
1.
2.
3.
4.
Name: Maken Mini5.
Review:
This is a spherical hard candy that doesn't taste like apple but I think I can be generous and say maybe "sour apple." It tastes exactly like one of the flavors of Fiji Fruits - I don't know if anyone remembers them, they were possibly an obscure candy from the 80s.

Rad in Theaters: A Retrospective
I was pretty sure I wasn't going to make a post about going to see Rad in theaters - I was sure I wouldn't need to talk about seeing a movie - but there were so many interesting things that happened, I have to now...
Some thoughts:
- Going into the theater a guy held the door for me wearing the same Rad t-shirt that I was wearing. Nice.
- In the theater, before the previews, there was Rad Trivia. I have to say I was stumped on a few.
- There was a commercial advertising that bikes exactly like Cru's Murray will be available next year.
- Before the film there was a trailer for the new cut of "Rocky IV" which was peculiar because that movie and Rad are both from around the same time, both coming back to theaters in 2021 and both star Talia Shire.
- The original Fathom announcement advertised: "fans will see for the first time 'A Rad Documentary – Inside the BMX Movie That Changed Everything.' ...the documentary gives audiences an inside look into the making of the film that helped catapult the extreme popularity of the 1980s BMX fad." It's amazing how misleading that statement is and yet it's not false - every word matters and is probably calculated. After the credits, they did not show a special documentary per se, they showed a sneak-peek at a Rad documentary that is coming out at a later date. Bad news, good news...Yes, a full-length "Rad" documentary is coming.
- I was surprised at how many people were laughing at parts of the movie which were not intended to be comedic. The art of serious cinema is just not appreciated these days.
- One person (who wasn't me) remarked that they should have played "The Dirt Bike Kid" trailer before the movie. That was the line of the night.
- In the restaurant where Cru works, there's an advertisement for strawberries and I think that's it. Just strawberries.
- With the large picture size, the difference between Sgt. Smith and his stunt man was pretty apparent. In fact, all the shots of stuntmen are pretty easy to pick out but Sgt. Smith is the funniest.
- The Reynolds Twins' criticisms of Cochrane are even more stinging on the big screen.
- The woman who has to get through the parade because she has cakes in the oven appears to also be handing out small American flags even as she's panicking. Watch it again, it makes no sense at all.
- With the enlarged detail, it occurred to me that every Rad shirt I've ever seen is inauthentic. It makes sense, in the movie, the logo is stenciled so there can be no totally enclosed empty space. The "R", "a", "d", etc have breaks in the lines.
- Cru should not be riding his bike into the river before the big race, he's risking injury. That's very self-destructive!
- Right before the first qualifier, someone's wearing a Captain's Hat. Nice:
- It really is a perfectly constructed movie in the sense that every plot twist is foreshadowed.
- The guy who works at 7-11 is wearing a shirt that has a "7-11" print. On VHS it just looks like a green shirt.
- I never noticed before (again, greater detail) that during Hell Track Becky is wearing a...like, a Pith Helmet.
- The credits end with a warning about kids not trying stunts. Never saw that before.
- Sitting there, waiting for the movie to start, in walks this guy:
Rad - In Theaters Tonight
Camera, curtains, lights!
This is it, we'll hit the heights!
Oh what heights we'll hit!
On with the show this is it!
Just a reminder that Rad is back in theaters for one night only and it's tonight. Even if you have your SATs tonight, I say this is more important.

Korean Snack Reviews #4
The last time I did one of these it was July. In fact, we're coming up on the 1 Year Anniversary of the start of this. This is not how it was supposed to go.
Well, anyways...
1.
They have a taste that's hard to describe but I would best reckon it as "seaweed." They're not for me, wouldn't recommend.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Fun fact: I can't try Green Tea because I have a weird allergic (or something) reaction to it. The only symptom it causes that I really wish to talk about is it makes me dizzy, causing the world to spin slowly and makes it hard to walk a straight line. It's like being drunk, in short. I still remember walking down the hall at work and stumbling back and forth, trying to get my balance. Very strange.
Needless to say I didn't try this one but I'm going to go ahead and assume that the Green Tea tastes like Green Tea.
And that's it. Next Time: Japan Snacks #4.

The History of Super Mario Bros 3
A 50 minute video about Super Mario Bros 3 might be too much for some but I really enjoyed it. It's an excellent work and it's fascinating how a game could be so hyped and so built-up and yet deliver exactly what it promised.
Sometimes I can still see that bright yellow and re-live the excitement of that time.

Rad - The Bart Taylor Magazine Article
With the HD quality of the new Rad trailer, we can finally read the magazine article Cru reads about Bart Taylor:
HELL TRACK
COCHRAN, ORE.
BART,
The Man.
CAN HE BE STOPPED AT HELL TRACK?
He hasn't lost a race yet. Bart "The Man" Taylor has ripped up the pro class for the last three years. At the U.S. Open in Long Beach, California last month, Bart carted home a hefty $25,000 for the win, giving him an easy lead going into Hell Track in Cochran, Oregon, where the title of No. 1 Pro will be decided.
Of course, Bart will be the favorite to grab the glory at Hell Track, starting with the brand spankin' new '86 Corvette that goes with the pro win. His heavy pursuit of the No. 1 [place?] has given him very little free time for surfing or kicking back at his new condo right on Zuma Beach.
The blond-haired swoop master claims that his constant workout on his bike while on the road keeps him in shape for the national BMX circuit.
On and off the track, Bart's the dude to watch. No one comes close. You might remember last year's grandnational, when Taylor lapped half the pack -- that was KILLER. Also, rumor has it that he's been attempting countless swoops on this year's number one national girl and Mongoose teammate, Christian. No luck with her yet, but he's got groupies to spare. Ah, the spoils of being the best.
BMX ACTION
A few thoughts.
This one throwaway prop alters forever my perspective of the entire movie. Bart has been competing for 3 straight years and hasn't lost even a single race? Not even 2nd place? Every great athlete loses at least sometime. If he had merely been the best rider, I'd believe Cru could prove himself to be the superior rider but now I think that's very unlikely. Bart must have won too much, became too satisfied and lost his edge.
The other thing is: I love that they mention, in a magazine article, that Bart is hitting on Christian. If they're going out, that'd be one thing but if he's hitting on her and getting rejected, why does that make it into a magazine? And then they go the opposite direction and talk about how he's got "groupies to spare," geez. Would that really happen? Sure, it was a completely different era and I have no knowledge of BMX magazines but it seems wacky.

What is Malt?
It might sound dumb but I've always wondered what malt was. From "going to the Malt Shop" in old movies to the candy malted milk balls, I always had it in the back of my mind.

Late Show - The Dr. Phil Trilogy
Over the past week and a half I've released my own "Dr. Phil Trilogy" to youtube. I don't expect it to perform well - I think people see "Dr. Phil" and think "who cares?"
But this was a fun era in David Letterman history. For months they isolated clips of Dr. Phil out of context and played them for comedy on the show (Video #1). And then Dr. Phil agreed to come on the show and implied that it may come to violence (Video #2). Then the actual interview (Video #3) was actually combative (in a playful, jokey way).
I have no particular opinion of Dr. Phil but the whole saga was fun and funny. I wish I had more "Dr. Phil's Words of Wisdom" clips but it was a daily segment and I felt overwhelmed. Also, someone started a website where you could read through them all and I figured that was good enough, not thinking that anything like youtube would ever exist.
All of this was a stepping stone, I think, toward getting on Oprah - and, for all I know, it worked.
Sidenote: The youtube algorithm is an interesting thing. The Norm Macdonald clip that I posted 2 weeks ago has over 60,000 views. The Conan clip that I posted a week later is at 127 views.
