"Philly" Comedian Joe Matarese, who lives in New York, is thinking of moving to Philadelphia (or some place in the Philadelphia area). He has created a new podcast where he talks about moving to Philly and asks callers which town/area he should move to specifically.
Blink Mike and Craig listen to his podcast and try to digest what is going on.
"Why Are You Laughing" the history of comedy podcast, talks about the HBO animated series "The Life and Times of Tim."
And since you, and I, have never seen or heard of the show, it becomes a case of "Eh? You want to check it out, right?"
And I do want to check it out because he uses the magical phrase "the most underrated show of all time." Any show with that descriptor is a show I want to see. Of course, I think the most underrated show of all time is the Canadian show "The Newsroom" - which nobody has seen and when you suggest it people think you're talking about a different show and dismiss your opinion, and even if they don't, and in the 1-in-a-million chance that try to check out the show, they won't find it anywhere; but even if they did find it and watched it, they'd shrug and say "meh, it was just 'ok'" and not see where I was coming from at all, maybe you just had to be there, man - but that's neither here nor there.
Or maybe my pick for most underrated show of all time is "Hogan's Heroes."
Blind Mike has started hate watching GD Fenderson's second stand-up comedy special and it's worth noting that there is a playlist for all the clips of him watching GD Fenderson's first comedy special.
Dubbed "The World's Worst Comedy Special: The GD Fenderson Saga," it can be seen here.
Note that the order of the playlist is unfortunately REVERSE chronological order.
Worlds collide as the history-of-comedy podcast "Why Are You Laughing?" examines the career of Karl Pilkington.
This is one where I can say "I lived it." I was listening to the XFM broadcasts basically on a loop from around 2003 to around 2013. I was there when they reunited for the BBC, did the podcast, made the HBO show, and so on. I mention this by way of reminiscing, rather than some form of bragging. I recommended Ricky, Steve and Karl to so many people and only one person really got it. But that was a big hit.
There's a project underway that's unearthing "new" XFM material and remastering the archives. I've lost track of it though. For whatever reason, the clip I shared of the new material has been deleted. But if you're looking to track down that project, you can start here.
Bryan Callen wants to be known as something of an intellectual and gives an interview where he espouses the benefits of reading books. Blind Mike watches the interview and mocks him.
Blind Mike continues trudging through GD Fenderson's "worst stand-up special in history." Getting toward the end now but I think I'm looking for a full compilation so I can catch up on what I missed.
I posted the full Harvey Pekar/David Letterman collection a while back, but I know from firsthand experience that that's not for everyone. If you want just the highlights as well as humorous commentary, Blind Mike takes you through Harvey Pekar's appearances on Letterman.
And in case anyone's wondering, I'm fully on Letterman's side in this. The "you're a guest in my house" paradigm is 100% correct. But while I don't fully agree with the thrust of "American Splendor," it is quite a good film.
Blind Mike has some thoughts on Jon Stewart's reaction to the Late Show's cancellation and it serves as an incisive look at the entire late night talkshow landscape.
My first reaction to the idea that talkshows can be more like podcasts was to dismiss it. But then he mentions Charlie Rose and Tom Snyder and it seems reasonable. That is essentially what those shows were. And they never got great ratings but they could be successful because they were so inexpensive to produce.
I don't believe I've mentioned GD Fenderson already. GD is a stand-up comedian who's alledgedly made the worst stand-up special of all-time. Blind Mike is watching/reacting to the entire special in installments - every week or so, they're trudging through a few more minutes.
In this episode, they find a fun way to treat the added captions. It really elevates the material.
The official designations from Blind Mike are: Tom Myers is the worst stand-up comedian of all-time but GD Fenderson has the worst special of all-time. I haven't looked into it in-depth but I find these terms to be reasonable.
