The Charismatic Voice - Chicago

I'm a big fan of "25 or 6 to 4." Although she doesn't harp on it, for me it's the bass line.

If you'd like to see my shallow dive on Chicago, see this post.

And speaking of the bass, here's a fun fact for your next barbecue or otherwise social engagement...

Three classic rock songs with the same chord progression:

1) Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4

2) Green Day - Brain Stew

3) Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You

Eh? Eh? Where else are you going to get that? Granted, I don't have other examples to make this a running thing. Still, pretty interesting, I think. Who did it best?

Led Zeppelin at Live Aid (1985)

I'm increasingly getting the ultra-strange experience of remembering a certain blog post and finding that it actually doesn't exist. Many years back I got the full DVD set of Live Aid and made detailed notes for a blog post (or series of blog posts) about the whole thing. Today I find no such blog post exists. Where was I writing all those observations? What am I remembering? I'm not going to try again.

Regardless, one of the main stories of Live Aid was how Led Zeppelin reunited for it but when the time came for the full concert footage to be released on DVD (the one I watched), they refused to let their performance be included.

Remembering all of this recently, I wondered whether the footage had shown up on the web, and found that it had.

I don't post it here because it's great, but because of the historical uniqueness of it. "Rare" footage of a famous performance and all that.

Also on youtube is an overlong mini-documentary about the reunion - what went wrong and why. It's titled "Not Phil Collins' Fault: The Story of Led Zeppelin 's 1985 Live Aid Reunion." Check it out if you're interested enough to spend an hour.

Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand

Slow days on the blog, I suppose. Struggling with sleep and lethargy lately. Hopefully some Zeppelin will do the trick.

For anyone keeping score at home, this is my favorite Led Zeppelin song.

All authoritative sources says this is "Achilles Last Stand" with no apostrophe. I did a preliminary search to find out why, I found nothing. Achilles is the name of a man, he had a last stand, his name ends with an "S" so this should be "Achilles' Last Stand"... surely? Those rockers and their thumbing their nose at grammar. Actually, there's a part in the documentary "The Beatles: Get Back" where George Harrison is wondering if his lyrics are grammatically correct. He's one of the good ones though.

The Charismatic Voice - Since I've Been Loving You

Are you ready to start your 30 minute Zeppelin journey of emotion?

And here is where I insert the unnecessary critique. I think it's a disservice that her first exposure of Led Zeppelin's music is the live versions rather than the studio versions. The jazz-like riffing and mutation hangs on the previous knowledge of the song's original form. It's a bit like seeing a parody of a movie without seeing what it is mocking (not to say that Led Zeppelin live is a parody). But... she really seems to enjoy them so... as long as she's happy...
